Wolves are closing in on their first significant signing of the winter transfer window as Olympiacos winger Daniel Podence appears to be a medical away from being confirmed, and their activity isn’t stopping there with deadline day rapidly approaching.
What’s he said?
The west Midlanders have announced an U23 addition in Enzo Loiodice already today with Podence set to follow suit imminently.
It is believed that the club are still chasing a first-team striker, but they are quickly running out of time as Friday’s 11pm deadline is merely a few days away.
Spiers tweeted the latest news on their transfer plans, he said:
Season-defining
The signing of a new striker must now be their absolute priority as Nuno Santo simply cannot afford to go into the rest of the campaign without actual squad depth up front.
Currently, he only has one senior number nine at his disposal in Raul Jimenez, and even then at times, he has looked jaded due to the alarming amount of matches he has had to play since the summer.
The Mexican has made 37 appearances this term, scoring 20 goals, which is excluding his Gold Cup campaign for his national side as well as Wolves’ pre-season in China.
A long-term injury to Jimenez would seriously put their season in danger as it would fall on youngster Benny Ashley-Seal to pick up the pieces and his limited game time so far has hardly been encouraging.
The other option would be to play Diogo Jota centrally, but he thrived off the 3-5-2 system last season contributing to 17 goals, so there are question marks over him being so isolated on his own.
Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?
Wolves currently sit seventh in the Premier League and are in the knockout stages of the Europa League, so a backup striker could prove to be integral to their chances of extending their run at competing in both competitions.
And in other news,ÂWolves transfer target could leave his current club this week according to his manager…
